Riders drive heart care

29 Oct 2026

More than 300 cyclists rolled into Cooktown in September this year after completing the 2026 Australian Retirement Trust Cardiac Challenge, capping off a memorable 20th anniversary event that raised more than $553,519 for healthcare in Far North Queensland.
The three-day ride from Cairns to Cooktown brought together riders, volunteers, sponsors and supporters to celebrate two decades of the iconic fundraising event, with the 2026 tally now one of the hightest Cardiac Challenges fundraisers in the event’s history.
Funds raised through this year’s ride will support the installation of a cardiac CT scanner at Cairns Hospital, helping clinicians diagnose heart disease earlier and reducing the need for Far North Queensland patients to travel interstate for specialist cardiac imaging.
Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation CEO Gina Hogan said the event’s 20th anniversary had been a powerful reminder of the generosity and community spirit that had defined the Cardiac Challenge since its inception.
“For 20 years, the Cardiac Challenge has brought people together to make a real difference for healthcare in our region, and this year’s event has been one of our most successful yet,” Mrs Hogan said.
“To see more than 300 riders take on the journey from Cairns to Cooktown while raising more than $553,519 for local patients is incredibly inspiring. And to now know that we’ve contributed more than $7 million to cardiac services in the region – we know we’re making a difference and it all started with one person wanting to make a difference.
“This event has never just been about cycling. It’s about people riding for loved ones, riding in memory of someone special, riding in gratitude for the care they’ve received, and riding to ensure future patients have access to the very best healthcare close to home.
“The cardiac CT scanner project will transform cardiac care in Far North Queensland, allowing earlier diagnosis, faster treatment decisions and better outcomes for patients across our region.
“Every rider, volunteer, sponsor and donor who contributed to this year’s Cardiac Challenge should be immensely proud of what they’ve achieved together.”
This year’s event also celebrated the thousands of people who have participated in the Cardiac Challenge throughout its 20-year history.
The anniversary ride featured a range of special celebrations recognising long-term riders, volunteers and supporters who have helped build the event into one of the region’s most recognised and successful charity cycling challenges.
The Foundation also acknowledged the ongoing support of naming rights sponsor Australian Retirement Trust, along with the many event sponsors, volunteers and support crew whose contributions help make the Cardiac Challenge possible each year.
