FAR North Queensland’s community is kicking goals, helping take cancer care to the next level in the region.
Today the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation has announced a $10,000 donation towards the fundraising campaign from Brothers Leagues Club Cairns.
Foundation CEO Gina Hogan said the donation brings the campaign to $1,175,304 or almost 80 per cent of the $1.5 million needed.
Taking patient care to the next level is the catch-cry of the campaign, which will mean more cancer patients will receive their treatment locally rather than having to travel south, more will live longer with cancer as new treatments are discovered, more can be treated each day, chemotherapy manufacturing will be expanded on site and inpatients will have better outcomes in their treatment experience.
“There has been a 40% increase in cancer activity at the Liz Plummer Cancer Care Centre in the past five years. This is primarily because of the vast array of cancer treatments now available – people are living longer with cancer rather than dying prematurely,” Mrs Hogan said. “Every donation, large and small will make a difference.”
Brothers Leagues Club Cairns General Manager Jason Salecich said the donation was an easy decision for the true community club.
“Our board succinctly understands the need to support the wider community and this has to be one of the most worthy causes out there. Anything that enhances treatment, provides care, or offers support to cancer sufferers and their families is something our community deserves,” Mr Salecich said.
“We are privileged and honoured to be able to help and reaching that financial milestone is now $10, 000 closer and that’s exciting,” he said.
