MORE than $135,000 has been donated towards improving endoscopy services in the Far North, in just three weeks.
The Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation’s “Show us ya guts” campaign is powering ahead – receiving two large donations of $75,000 and $47,000, as well as numerous smaller donations.
Lyn and Mark Seles of Project Hardware and Doors donated $5000 in five $1000 lots via the website, last Thursday.
“We had decided we wanted to donate $5000 but then we saw five different items, so we decided to put $1000 towards each of them,” Mrs Seles said.
“As a 100 per cent locally-owned business, we like to donate towards local charities each year and we just noticed this campaign so thought it was good to support. We’re both in our fifties so if Cairns can have this facility, it’s really in everyone’s interest,” she said.
Foundation fundraising and marketing manager Glenys Duncombe said she was blown away by all the donations.
“We’ve had numerous donations of $20 or $100, and a couple of pensioners donated $1000. In fact, one gentleman came in to see us last week with $1005 in cash. He had caught a taxi in from the southern suburbs specifically to give us this money and when we asked him why $1005 and not
$1000, he said he saw someone else donate $1000 and wanted to go one better. He was pretty amazing,” Ms Duncombe said.
“All our donors are pretty amazing,” she said. “We’re getting close to the end of financial year, if anyone has any cash under their mattress, we’d love to hear from them.”
To date, $135,632 has been raised with $274,000 to go. The oesophageal manometry equipment has been fully funded, leaving four pieces still to be funded – two balloon enteroscopes, a linear eus scope and a radial eus scope.
