Bringing life-saving ECMO to FNQ

Raised: $800,000

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our community, Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation has raised the funds needed to bring ECMO to Cairns Hospital.

ECMO – extracorporeal membrane oxygenation – is an advanced life support system used for critically ill patients whose heart or lungs are unable to function properly on their own. It gives their body vital support while doctors treat the underlying condition and gives patients more time to recover.

This project will make a life-saving difference for patients across Far North Queensland by helping provide:

  • Quicker access to advanced critical care for some of our sickest patients.
  • Support for patients with severe heart or lung failure.
  • More time for specialist teams to treat complex, life-threatening conditions.
  • Greater access to life-saving technology without patients needing to be transferred away from their support networks where possible.

The funds were raised through a spectacular fundraising dinner, backed by the generosity of our donors, sponsors and supporters, including Kenfrost Homes, which once again stepped up when asked to help.

Because of that support, ECMO will soon be on its way to Cairns Hospital – giving critically ill patients in Far North Queensland quicker access to technology that can help save lives when every moment matters.
