CAIRNS Hospital is on track to welcome a state-of-the-art surgical robot later this year, marking an important step forward in access to highly specialised surgery for patients across Far North Queensland.
The Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation led a $4.3 million community appeal to support the acquisition of DaNi, an advanced surgical robotic system expected to arrive at Cairns Hospital around the middle of the year.
As a sophisticated and high-value piece of medical equipment, the robotic system must go through a detailed procurement process managed by Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service. Ordering, configuration, shipping and delivery of specialised medical technology can take several months to ensure it meets strict clinical and safety standards.
The Health Service expects to purchase and take delivery of the robotic system between July and August. Following installation and final preparations, surgeons will begin using DaNi soon after it arrives.
DaNi will support major urology procedures, including surgery for prostate cancer, as well as pelvic surgery for colorectal cancer and the repair of complex abdominal hernias. The technology will allow more patients to receive advanced surgical care closer to home and reduce the need to travel long distances for treatment.
The arrival of DaNi for health care in the region reflects the strength of community support working alongside local health services to improve care for Far North Queensland.
