SONOGRAPHER Alf Hall (pictured) has had the unenviable task of performing thousands of ultrasounds on pregnant women that have lost their baby.
“Unfortunately for our wonderful and cohesive sonography team this is a daily occurrence. Pregnancy loss is traumatic for women, partners, family, and friends,” Mr Hall said.
One of only a few male sonographers in CHHHS, Mr Hall said it was never easy and each situation was different.
"Informing women that they have lost their babies is one of the most challenging aspects of sonography. Each time, it weighs heavily on my heart. I am fortunate to be part of a fantastic group of midwives, antenatal staff, sonographers, allied health, administration staff and doctors who support women during this difficult time," Mr Hall said.
His 23 years’ ultrasound experience in Far North Queensland has motivated him to take part in this year’s Alive Pharmacy Warehouse Ride for Isabel – fundraising for pregnancy loss.
Mr Hall will take part with his 14-year-old daughter, in what will be her longest bike ride to date.
The Alive Pharmacy Warehouse Ride for Isabel, scheduled to take place on August 27, is aimed at shedding light on the emotional and physical struggles that accompany pregnancy loss.
Hosted by the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, the ride will be an enjoyable 53km or 100km around the cane fields of Gordonvale.
Participants are fundraising to support families who undergo pregnancy loss.

Foundation Fundraising and Marketing Manager Glenys Duncombe paid credit to Mr Hall for stepping up to support his patients.
“Alf’s participation is really special – he's a clinician working in this field every day. It obviously resonates with him and his family and we’re so grateful for their support,” Ms Duncombe said.
